Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) & Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

If your eyes constantly feel dry, irritated, burning, watery, or tired, you may be suffering from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—the leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease.

At Renner Eye Care, we offer advanced in-office treatments using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) to target the underlying cause of dry eye, not just the symptoms.

What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed LIght (IPL)Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses precisely controlled pulses of light to reduce inflammation around the eyelids and improve the function of the meibomian glands, which produce the protective oil layer of your tears.

IPL may help:

  • Improve oil gland function
  • Reduce eyelid inflammation
  • Decrease bacterial overgrowth and Demodex mites
  • Improve tear stability
  • Reduce burning, redness, and irritation

Clinical studies have shown IPL can significantly improve symptoms and tear film quality in many patients with meibomian gland dysfunction.

What Is Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)?

Low-Level LIght TherapyLLLT uses gentle, non-heating red and near-infrared light to stimulate the meibomian glands at the cellular level. This relaxing treatment complements IPL by encouraging healthier gland function and reducing inflammation.

Potential benefits include:

  • Improved meibomian gland activity
  • Increased tear film stability
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Comfortable, non-invasive treatment
  • Safe for all skin types

Research suggests that combining IPL with LLLT may provide greater improvement than either treatment alone for many patients with evaporative dry eye.

Who Is a Candidate?

You may benefit from IPL and LLLT if you experience:

  • Burning or stinging eyes
  • Fluctuating or blurry vision
  • Excessive tearing
  • Red eyes
  • Contact lens discomfort
  • Gritty or sandy sensation
  • Chronic blepharitis
  • Ocular rosacea
  • Dry eye that has not improved with artificial tears

What to Expect

Your dry eye evaluation includes advanced testing to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. If IPL and LLLT are appropriate, we will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your condition.

Most patients undergo a series of treatments over several weeks, followed by maintenance treatments as needed. Many patients notice gradual improvement in comfort, vision, and overall eye health over the course of treatment, though individual results vary.

Why Choose Renner Eye Care?

We believe successful dry eye treatment goes beyond eye drops. Our goal is to identify the root cause of your symptoms and provide evidence-based treatments that improve the health of your tear film and eyelids for lasting relief.
